Deb is delusional she honestly thinks it was Brian's job to make Michael into the man he would never be, she wanted Michael to make her proud after all her sacrifices and instead Michael stayed fourteen and just got worst, while Brian got better and better.
Deb is pissed that Michael will never grow up and that Brian did grow up, so she tried as hard as she could to hold him back, with each new roadblock she threw Brian plowed through and became more successful, every time Brian succeeded her love for him turned into resentment and her resentment turned into abuse.
I believe Deb realized at some point she was abusing Brian but she just couldn't stop it anymore because Brian kept showing up Michael, in her mind she probably thought if Brian was gone Michael would be more successful only her wish never came into fruition.
Deb thinks she loves Brian but like Michael and Lindsay she hates him, for constantly reminding her that Michael's failures are hers and that without Brian they are Fugly, Selfish People Without Morals or Souls.
Michael whining over a watch that he was never going to get shows how no matter what he will always be the kid Brian should've left behind years ago to sink or swim alone, and that he will always be the kid in the middle of the store throwing the loudest tantrum and making everyone wish they could either beat that kid or his Mama, while also secretly happy that that isn't their kid lol

Got caught up the chapters. Great writing. Now we are moving along with the trial and I love it. This story has kept my interest from the beginning.
