Wow, what a powerful moving story. It is sad that this fictional story is really happening to so many kids. I have no tolerance for abusers of any kind, but especially children. Well written and definitely a tissue box story.

Author's Response:

Yes, it is definitely sad...particularly that kids often fall through the cracks even when things get reported. I'm glad you liked the story and were moved by it. <3

I'm sorry I didn't get around to reading this sooner... had a busy last two days. And Oh how I wish I could have read this sooner!  This was a perfect portrayal of the Debbie-Brian relationship. Your very first paragraph summed up so much. And when Debbie thought of how few friends Michael had as an eighth-grader, I've always believed that, too. I loved Michael's perception of "we" after only a week. Poor Mikey. He never stood a chance, did he? Smitten with Brian from the very beginning.

Brian's abuse. Brian's reaction to the first time Debbie hugged him, and to come so far as to welcome the hugs, broke my heart. Debbie's first time when she had to bring Brian to the hospital. Why didn't the Doctor and Nurse question more as to why that much medical care seemed needed? Instead they only told Brian to let his "brain rest".

I'm surprised Debbie's face hadn't left a bruise. Vic would have been outraged. But at least there didn't appear to be any repercussions from his father from Debbie's visit. Then when Christmas came a cuple days lately... again you broke my heart. God, Brian had such a horrible life. Somebody should have taken Jack out behind a shed and beat the shit out of him.

In the show, when Michael was going to try for the managers position at the Big Q because Deb needed to take it easy and needed finacial help; Brian had offered to help out with some money, and Michael said, "But this is my mom"... I always thought that was a slap-in-the-face to Brian. And your story proved that. Debbie was a true mother to Brian. Michael should have realized how much Brian wanted to help the mother-of-his heart. Knowing Brian, he did find ways of helping Deb out. After all, he was leaving big tips at the Diner.

Well, off to read "Three Days". I'm really anxious to read that one, too.

XOXO ~ Cathy

Author's Response:

I've always thought that Brian did end up helping out when Deb needed money...and as usual, doesn't want any fanfare, no thank yous or recognition. And you're right, that would be a slap in the face.

As for the hospital...in my mind, this was not Brian's first trip to the rodeo. He knew how to tell the story to not raise an eyebrows or suspicions, and he'd been doing it, coached by his mother more than likely, for his whole life.

And I had tears in my own eyes when I wrote that last scene... *sniff*

I love, love, love exploring this relationship. So now I have it fully down on paper, what the backstory is between Brian and Deb when they interact in my fics.

I love that you loved this one too! And I can't wait to hear what you think about "Three Days."

I have no words. This was everything I hoped for and more. God, I’m not kidding, this was perfect. Just how I imagined it - but better. I really think this is what happened, donim saying it IS cannon, k? The way Deb would have happily had Brian live with them, even if it meant she struggled more then she already was made my heart hurt but also fill with love all st the same time. I dread to think what happened that night Brian came home. Hopefully Jack left him alone to recover ... but I doubt he let Brian off easily.

And omg I bet Deb was the first person to ever really hug him, that makes my heart ache :(

Argh, I love this his so much!!

Author's Response:

I'm so glad it was everything you hoped for and more! <3 I am very happy with how it turned out. This is my headcanon for Debbie and Brian...so when they interact in my other fics, this is the background that informs their relationship. I can't believe how quickly this flowed out of my head, but it did. I love that you love it!

So this is the start of the lost boys.  I pretty sure that Brian eventually paid her back for caring.  Great job.

Author's Response:

Yes, Brian was Debbie's first "lost boy." :) And yes, I think he quietly did. We see a bit of it in the series, when Deb is having money struggles and Brian asks why no one asked him. My headcanon is that he did help out, quietly, not wanting any recognition or expecting a thank you. That just seems like Brian to me. Thanks for reading! <3
