Sorry for the lateness in reading, but I guess you understand why.

This is so sad and heart-rending. And it happens to way too many kids today.

I was surprised that you wrote this as Hunter's first time, as the show made it appear that he'd been doing it for a long time prior to hustling n the streets. But this was way more impacting.

And the fact that Hunter was thinking he'd like to try a girl, and he didn't even like this, God, my heart just about burst wide open along with his tears at the end.

A couple of more thoughts regarding Brian hit me this time while reading. All that wandering around the hotel - naked - he's lucky no one saw him and got put in the slammer for public indecency.

And what are the people that rent that room gonna smell and think about the housekeeping staff???

And just a crazy thought - what the hell is the bellboy gonna do with the condom? Bathe in it? YUCK...

I better quit whle I'm ahead. Or maybe he'll stand on street corner and sell it to some woman! LOL

Hugs,

Cathy

Author's Response:

I deliberately didn't state Hunter's age here because it's over two years before we meet him in S3, and he only turns sixteen at the end of that season. l’d say he’s well shy of fourteen at this point. His mother seems to have pushed him to hustle with the 'You like young dick? For fifty, you can suck it. For one hundred, I'll let you fuck me' routine when Hunter was twelve. (In 4.01, in the courtroom, Mel brings up Hunter's statement about how Rita "coerced him from the age of twelve into acts of prostitution.")

For purposes of this story, I assumed that happened when he was close to thirteen and that Rita didn't watch him in action but just dropped him off on Liberty Avenue to earn money if he wanted a roof over his head. I have Hunter getting away with blow jobs and hand jobs up to this point. If he earned enough money, Rita wouldn't care how he did it.

Hunter’s so cocky and self-assured in canon - it had become a built-in defense mechanism - that what his preference might be never really gets addressed. The way he comes on to Brian, which is pretty funny, makes it seem that he must prefer men. Until Callie, but even then it’s not clear whether he likes women or men or possibly both.

Brian’s lucky no one else was in the hallway when he exited Telson’s hotel room… as far as we know :D He may have had to brazen it out and hope the display of his ‘charms’ kept him out of trouble.

If the guests complain (it can’t smell good in their hotel room!), let’s hope housekeeping doesn’t accept the blame. After an investigation, either fired or suspended without pay, Johnny the bellhop ends up on Liberty Avenue, hawking, “Brian Kinney’s fresh sperm. C’mon, what’ll you give me for it? Three hundred. No, five hundred from the lady in the camel coat. Do I hear six hundred?”

Obviously, that sperm’s not going to be fresh anymore, but the buyers don’t have the sense to beware. Who do we think snatched it up? For how much?

Does Brian hear about it? How does he react? Dun dun dun...

Thanks for commenting, Cathy :) Hugs back atcha,

Oh, that didn’t work :( It was supposed to be Covid clusters and needles. Emojis work better on AO3.

This series is amazing! I wish there was more!

Author's Response:

I was thinking of leaving you a bunch of question marks in response to your earlier comment :D

Ooh, wouldn't that be cool if we could send Covid back in time, targeting specific people without having it spread.

Thanks for the triple review! :) You've made my day.

Thanks for giving this a try and leaving a comment, Cathy.

Hello ! You know how much I hesitated to read this story and well I do not regret having started!

Telson is just such a disgusting guy. Could he have messed up Brian at Marty? Ryder has never been a pleasant character for me on the show. Did he expect Brian to really be a bitch? So with your story I think he must have denigrated Brian against Vance. My God what a shit team.

The bell boy couldn't have believed his eyes when he saw Brian naked, thinking he had a chance. I love how you fit Justin into Brian's thoughts. We can see that he is more and more addicted. The last scene of the show with Gus in Brian's arms was so sweet it's good you mentioned it. Brian needed to get out of the Telson gutter.

Hope you give us Hunter's POV. Poor kid, his mother threw him down a rotten path but stumbling across Telson must have given him a horrible night's sleep despite Telson's dying thoughts. How can he think of his son and continue with a kid, what a pervert.

Thank you very much I am never disappointed by your stories and while waiting for the next one (maybe Tricky?) I will reread this one. So well written and asking so many questions.

Author's Response:

I totally get it, Marie-france. I'd have trepidation about reading this story if I hadn't written it. I'm so glad you don't regret the read!

We don't see a lot of Ryder in canon, but what we do see is underwhelming, to say the least. I strongly suspect that Telson might have put a bug in Ryder's ear in an effort to 'get even' with Brian. He could have easily made it sound like Brian didn't 'deliver' like he should have. Who knows what Ryder might have already thought of Brian - he might have harbored anti-gay sentiments. When the Kip Thomas incident happened (Brian really should have known better), that might have been the last straw. Ryder could have sold to Gardner and undermined Brian while making the sale.

Thank you, I had fun weaving Justin into Brian's thoughts. The bellboy didn't stand a chance, even before his strange, somewhat creepy behavior. The blond boy had already started to hook Brian; an attachment was forming without Brian being aware of it. After all, he'd already defended Justin to Michael as being "kinda sweet" (and putting Michael's nose out of joint :D). After Telson and the bellboy, Brian needed the comfort that only his son could provide. And Gus gave him good advice, right? ;) He'll soon collect the other boy he met the night Gus was born :)

As I just wrote in my reply to Bec, Marvin's claims that he loves his family are suspect. First he dismisses his daughter's injury and then he pretty much does the same with his son when he rationalizes that Thomas could never be in the same situation as Hunter. He supposedly loves his family, but does he know them?

Rita is godawful. She's even worse than Telson. Who sends their child out to hustle if they want to keep a roof over their head?

Thanks for commenting, Marie-france! I always like reading your thoughts. Hunter's POV will be up later this week. Brynn and I are working on the next chapter of Tricky Business, but it will be a while before it's ready. We'll do our best to get a teaser up soon-ish.

Okay, is it normal to want to take a shower after reading a story?

The 63 year old me was shaking my head at Brian spending all that time naked walking around the hotel...

...but then we get to Marvin the Tire King, after completely ignoring his hurt kid, then picking up Hunter I thought, this is your own fault if Hunter is positive at this point.

And the tear really got to me, I just wanted to hug Hunter.

It's bad when a hustler makes you want to hug him and the "GOOD" guy made me want a shower.  Telson got what he deserved.  Praying that he and his wife gave up marrital sex years ago.

Author's Response:

A shower to wash off the scum left behind by both Telson and the bellboy? Absolutely normal.

*cough* I'm just a year behind you, but what can you do when Brian insists on parading around naked, looking for a good place to change... and then gets done in by a bobby pin :D

Marvin the less than marvelous is even more underwhelming than Marty Ryder. The way he deals with Brian is bad enough, but the clincher is the way he first dismisses his injured daughter and then, in a way, his son. Never mind his wife; she might as well not exist. When he acted like Thomas could never be in Hunter's situation, it made me wonder how well he knew his son. He might have flashed pictures of his family past Brian at Babylon, but then he started making excuses and adding caveats. He married young, before he knew. He loves his family, so why should he change things.

Sorry (not really) for making you sad... I'm happy to have provoked such provoked such an extreme reaction with that tear. Hunter desperately needs a hug.

Let's hope Telson's wife is getting plenty on the side... with one of Telson's employees. If she hasn't already booted him out of the marital bed, the way he brushed off the phone call about Trish might do the trick.

Thanks for commenting, Bec! :) Hunter's POV will be up later this week. You may want another shower...

I finished about five minutes ago, and have just been sitting here totally stunned. What does a person really say in a situation like this? We know from later on that poor Hunter was positive. So do we say: It serves you right, liar-oh-Marvin? He should have followed Brian’s advice. Because of his actions of not going home, now it’s going to be a really big deal. And if he and his wife don’t have protected sex, he just endangered her life too.

I’m still shaking my head. This is a hard story to wrap your head around. But you were right, it was a story needing telling.

Great job. A well crafted story. And maybe when I can get my jaw off the floor, I can actually come up with a valid review.

Hugs,

Cathy

Author's Response:

Thank you for commenting, Cathy. It's good to get some feedback :) Hearing that the story "punched you in the gut" lets me know I've written a powerful story.

I pushed Marvin Telson a little further than what we see onscreen in canon, although I think it slots into his character - and canon - neatly. As far as whether Marvin or Hunter is HIV positive, I purposely left it ambiguous. It could be either or neither. Hunter is positive when we meet him in S3, but this is a couple years earlier, so who knows? It he is positive and Marvin gets infected, it serves the sleazoid right. If he's not infected by Hunter, then it's going to be someone else...

If/when you recover enough, I'd love to hear more of your thoughts. Would you like to read Hunter's POV? Brian's scenes will be identical, but there's quite a bit of new material for Hunter, including a bit of backstory.

Hugs back atcha,

~ Karynn
