Very good story.  It shows that any of us can affected with something at any time.  You did have me afraid that it was Brian that was sick.  Good suspense.

Author's Response:

Thanks ;-) I'm really glad you enjoyed this story, and that it put you on edge a little bit. I guess it goes to show that you should always be grateful for the health you have. Thanks so much for reading and for your lovely review!

Deb

In all my emotional waffle, I forgot to say how much I love that Brian saved a kitty and would quite happily read a fanfic based solely around those two and their fierce friendship LOL

Author's Response:

Thanks Sally ;-) There is a specail place in my heart for Brian's little Ophelia *g* I actually have a few other stories that have her in them - I'll post them here ASAP *hugs*

My brother in law died of ALS and I now have a friend who has it.  It's a horrific disease.

I'm not sure where you are going with this, but this chapter was excellent.  I liked the ease that Em watched and evaluated Brian and Brian and Justin's interactions. Thanks for writing.

Author's Response:

Thanks for your thoughtful comment. I'm very sorry to hear about your brother-in-law. I had an acquaintance who died of it as well, but he was older. It must be a devastating disease to get in one's youth. I thought of ALS for this story after I read a book with a main character who gets it as a young women. Throughout the progress of the illness, she grows closer to her family, as I kind of imagine Brian and Claire might. I'm really glad you liked this story. I have a soft spot for Emmett - I think he and Brian understand each other in a way Brian's other friends don't. Thanks again for reading and again for your review!

Holy SMOKES, I finished reading this proper full on crying. Firstly. I assumed the cancer had come back, so when he mentioned his mom had come to see him, I then automatically assumed she was ill - so when you mentioned that it was Claire, well, that threw me. I always assumed Brian and Claire had been close as kids and had only grown apart as they got older and before she got sucked in by her mother (and the church) or her good for nothing husband. And that despite everything, he still loved her. I pictured Jack starting on them both as children and them only having each other, so of course, he'd be upset, even if she was now a complete and utter bitch.

My heart breaks for him here. I know you wrote this years ago, but I'd love to see what happened next. How did the boys react when he stepped in to help? Did he become a part of their lives after Claire died? Did Brian and Claire make amends before it was too late?

That was so wonderfully written. I admit, I do love me some hurt/comfort stories, especially when Justin is the one doing the caring for Brian <3

Author's Response:

Thanks Sally ;-) *Hands you a Kleenex* You hit the nail on the head when it comes to my understanding of Brian and Claire as well. Although Brian had issues with his family, I got the sense that he was family orientated. If he wasn't, he wouldn't have been so upset when Jack died, nor so upset by Joan's reaction to his being gay. And - despite everything - he still agreed to watch Claire's kid for her when she asked. She and Brian bicker and don't see eye-to-eye, but they still have the sense of being siblings. I can see Brian being upset if Claire ever got a terminal illness.

I'm really glad you enjoyed this story. Like many of my stories, I keep thinking I need to write a sequel. I like this particular universe at Britin, and I would love to see where the future would take Brian and Justin in this case. Keep pestering. It may still happen *hugs*

Heartbreaking in it's content towards the end.

Hysterical in Justin and his candy making endeavors. Em seems to know Brian's body tells almost as well as Justin.

Author's Response:

I'm thrilled that you enjoyed this story :-) I developed a soft spot for Emmett as the canon show progressed, in part becasue of his relationship with Brian. Emmett was in love with him (as Justin, Lindsay, Debbie and Michael were), nor did he fear/dislike him as Ted and Melanie did. He always stood his ground with Brian, with I liked. Glad you liked the candy-making exploits. I love to bake, but I'm pitiful and candy-making. I decided Justin would have to be the same *g* Thanks so much for reading and for your lovely review!

Wow!  Interesting storyline and love the way you've written it.  I do wonder if ALS is hereditary.  Does Brian think he might have it?  As you can tell I don't know that much about it.

Author's Response:

Thanks ;-) I'm very glad you enjoyed this! To my knowledge, ALS is not generally hereditatry, but there are a few genetic factors that may play into it. Certainly my direction in this story is not to have Brian get it. I don't think I could do that to him... I chose it for Clarie in this story after I read a book that had a main character that got it as a young woman. The novel was sad, but inspiring. I'm also a big fan of Stephen Hawkings. I could see Brian wanting to help Clarie, if she got it. Thanks so much for reading and for your lovely review!
